Our Mission
Incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in December 1998, the Alliance to Conserve Old Richmond Neighborhoods (the Alliance) exists to serve the City of Richmond through the revitalization of its oldest neighborhoods. the Alliance achieves this by promoting — to individuals of all income levels — the purchase and renovation of vacant and abandoned properties and advocates for the preservation of the cultural and historic assets that give these old neighborhoods their unique character.
To this end, the Alliance serves as a clearinghouse for information on how to acquire, finance, and/or renovate a property. While primarily focused on neglected buildings, the Alliance also encourages new commercial and residential development consistent with the historic character of communities. By working with other organizations, engaging public support, and leveraging assets, the Alliance facilitates the preservation of more buildings and neighborhoods than its own resources might allow. With the goal of returning neglected or abandoned structures to productive use and occupancy, the Alliance hopes to restore vitality to historically important urban areas and, thereby, improve the quality of life for all Richmonders.
the Alliance’s mission and marketing plan are modeled on the successful “Operation Comeback” program of the Preservation Resource Center in New Orleans.
Our Mission Goals include:
- to identify vacant, derelict and/or tax delinquent buildings in the older neighborhoods of Richmond, Virginia;
- to promote the purchase and renovation of the vacant and abandoned structures;
- to revitalize the inner city by educating its residents and by marketing its vacant houses to attract homeowners of all income levels; and
- to preserve the city’s past while enhancing and strengthening its neighborhoods for current and future Richmond citizens.
