PRESERVE THE MURPHY HOTEL!

Richmond's Murphy Hotel (known to the State as the Eighth Street Office Building) has been targeted for demolition by members of the General Assembly. The Assembly will vote to approve funding a contract requiring demolition by June 30 and demolition to begin by August 1 of this year! While we are honored to live in the city that is the seat of state government, we do not think our city's architectural heritage should be obliterated without meaningful input from its residents. We live here all the time-- not two months out of the year.

There is no question that the old hotel has been neglected (by the state, which has owned it for nearly 20 years); but it is still sound (according to the state's own study). A picture of the Murphy Hotel is attached, fyi. This unique landmark is a desirable property for private developers and the City of Richmond (which has publicly expressed interest in using it). The State can sell or trade it and put its parking on the eastern corner of the same block (now a state-owned empty lot).
