Lead Safe Richmond

“Lead Safe Richmond” is a Lead Poisoning Prevention Program funded by Housing & Urban Development, Richmond Community Development Block Grant, and the Center’s for Disease Control. Lead Poisoning is a preventable disease caused by eating, drinking or breathing substances that contain lead. Lead is in the air, soil, water and food.

Who Is Most Affected by Lead Poisoning?

Children under the age of six. Many children affected have no visible signs or symptoms. Children that are at risk for lead poisoning:
1. Those who live in old houses built before 1978 with chipping or peeling paint
2. Those who are between twelve months and 24 months
Those who have a habit of eating paint chips, plaster or other non-food items like newspaper or dirt

Identifying/Removing Lead-Based Paint

It is a violation of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code to have lead-based paint in your home. If a test is performed on your home and lead-based paint is found, it is a hazard & should be made safe or safely removed. The Lead-Safe Richmond Program provides:

Hazard Reduction/Abatement - Grants for lead-based paint hazard removal for those who meet income guidelines in the high-risk targeted area and within 80% of the MSA median.

Lead-Based Paint Inspection, Technical Assistance & Consultation - for all units located in the City of Richmond high risk targeted area. XRF Paint analysis & Risk Assessments of homes.
